Introduction to Crime Prevention Training & CPS Certification

The Ohio Crime Prevention Association will be offering a three-day Introduction to Crime Prevention Course for sworn and non-sworn professionals interested in beginning crime initiatives or those interested in refreshing their knowledge.  

Effective Crime Prevention has been seen as a key strategy in reducing crime and violence in our communities.  This comprehensive course is designed to address local community needs ranging from physical security to violence prevention.  

This course is tailored to the needs of today's crime prevention and community policing practitioners, and places great emphasis on programmatic initiatives giving the practitioners the knowledge, tools, and resources to do their jobs successfully.

Crime prevention is the anticipation, recognition and the appraisal of a crime risk and the initiation of some action to remove or reduce it.  Crime Prevention means working in partnership, rather than isolation, and working with concerned citizens to address ways to prevent crime and drug abuse.  It means communities and individual citizens learning how to protect themselves and to work together to keep their neighborhoods crime and drug free.  It means law enforcement working with communities, businesses, and service organizations to develop action plans based on information about crime and other problems.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED INCLUDE:

• History and Theory of Crime Prevention:  Historical overview, theory, and practice
• Professional Resource and Development:  Community programs, youth programs, crime analysis, crime prevention marketing, presentation and facilitation, time management, identify and growing potential leaders, and challenges
  
• Homeland Security:  Emergency Response Security
• Physical Security:  Burglary prevention, facility security, farm/rural crime prevention, loss prevention, crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED)
• Personal Safety and Security:  Personal safety, crime prevention for youth, crime prevention for seniors, prevention of cyber crimes, and violence prevention

CRIME PREVENTION SPECIALIST DESIGNATION:

After successfully completing this course and passing the written exam, attendees will be recommended to the Ohio Crime Prevention Association Board of Directors to be approved for the designation of Crime Prevention Specialist.  For more information on the CPS process and overview, please click here. 

INSTRUCTORS:

Instructors are know in their profession throughout Ohio with multiple years of experience in law enforcement, crime prevention, and loss prevention.  All instructors for this course are Ohio Certified Crime Prevention Specialists, are active in their profession, and are members of and certified to instruct by the Ohio Crime Prevention Association.

TRAINING INFORMATION:

Training will be held daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The Crime Prevention Specialist Exam is included with registration cost and will be offered on the last day of the course.  Training registration includes:  training materials, exam fees, and 1 year membership to the OCPA.
